Cycle Hire

London's favorite bike hire mobile app

Cycle Hire

London's favorite bike hire mobile app

Overview

Problem

While the Santander bikes of Cycle Hire are the most popular bike rentals of London, their app is highly underutilized. Increasing the app usage, especially during rush hour would help decrease traffic congestion on the road.

TfL believes that improving its digital offering via the website or digital apps could lead to quick-win improvements.

Solution

Screener surveys: 20
Gorilla User Interviews: 10
Usability Test: 20

Simplify the app by removing features with low activity and integrating the design system of the rest of the TFL apps while increasing app advertisement

Creating a "Quiet" feature to the route to avoid dangerous paths within the city and have a safer ride

Creating a promotional website for the app while adding a smart watch feature that allows you to get direction, price and hire code without your mobile

My role

This is a colaborative project with 2 other UX designers, Sam Rowe & Sam Chau. We used the double diamond method for this project and we were all involved at every stage.

I took the lead for the user interface design and prototyping by integrating the design system and developing the 20 screens prototype. In addition, I prepared ad conducted the usability tests of the prototype. In addition I contributed to the synthesizing of the research and the creation of the persona.

Impact

We designed a simpler version of the Cycle Hire app while integrating it with the rest of the more successful TFL apps.

Tools

Figma, Maze, Slack, Zoom

Redesigning the most popular bike hire app of London as a theoretical project.

What is Cycle Hire?

Cycle Hire, or Santander Cycles is the self-service, bike-sharing scheme for short journeys in London. The official Santander Cycles app from Transport for London is the only app to send bikes release codes straights to your smartphone. So you can skip past the docking station terminal and get on your bike quicker.

TfL is motivated to increase ridership of their bikes, particularly during peak times to decrease traffic congestion on the road (and increase revenue to the city). TfL believes that improving its digital offering via the website or digital apps could lead to quick-win improvements.

"The current app feels more like a website than a native app."

We recommend TFL to also start advertising for the app on the bikes, at the docking stations and on the other TFL stations.
